  • One of the best parts of the Main Beach volleyball community is how easy it is to jump in and play.

    Pick-Up Volleyball

Pick-up games happen regularly and are organized informally by players on the beach. Times and days vary based on season, weather, and court availability, but weekends and afternoons are common.

    Queens & Open Play

β€œQueens” games are a popular format at Main Beach and are a great way to meet players and get reps in. These games are typically:

    • Rotational

    • Self-organized

    • Skill-based depending on turnout

Most organization happens through word of mouth, group chats, and on-the-beach coordination.

Community Tip: Introduce yourself, ask questions, and respect rotations β€” the Main Beach community is welcoming to players who bring good energy and sportsmanship.

  • Main Beach volleyball courts operate on a first-come, first-served basis, with the exception of designated challenge courts and courts that have been reserved through the City of Santa Cruz.

Courts 1–6 are typically used by more competitive players and include challenge court play. All other courts are first come, first served and are shared by the community unless they have been paid for and officially reserved through the City of Santa Cruz.

The City of Santa Cruz provides the nets, lines, and antennas. Players must bring their own volleyballs. Please bring your own ball and do not take or use balls that are not yours.

William Head sends out a weekly email letting the community know which courts are reserved. If you would like to be added to this list, please contact us and we will share your information with him.

For everyone’s safety, if your ball rolls onto another court, loudly call β€œball on” so players on neighboring courts can safely stop play and avoid injury. Be mindful of adjacent courts and retrieve balls promptly and respectfully.
